How to Make Chocolate Apples

Chocolate apples purchased from a candy store will cost anywhere from $8.50 to $15. I’m going to show you how you can make this perfect gift item for a fraction of that cost! You’ll want to make extra for yourself!
I’ve been making chocolate candy treats for years, and the very best advice I can give you is to use better chocolate. You can use chocolate chips, but the end result won’t be nearly as good as it will if you use melting chocolate. Not to worry, I’ll give you a link to purchase the perfect Ghirardell chocolate inexpensively from Amazon.
You will need…
4 large firm apples such as granny smith
4 wooden popsicle sticks
16 ounces of Ghirardell melting chocolate – dark, milk or white
Double boiler if you don’t want to use your microwave to melt the chocolate
Bowls for melting the chocolate.
Instructions:
Wash the apples, dry them and insert the sticks in the top. Place the apples in the refrigerator while you are melting your chocolate. The chocolate will stick better to cold apples. Wipe any condensation off the apples before dipping in the chocolate.
Melt the chocolate in the double boiler over boiling water. Or, put the chocolate in a bowl and place in the microwave. Chocolate can scorch in the microwave so start with 50 seconds, stir and put back in the microwave for another 25 seconds. Repeat this process until the chocolate is melted.
Take the apples from the refrigerator, wipe the condensation off and dip in to the melted chocolate. Life and swirl the apple to coat evenly. Hold the apple up over the bowl and let the extra drip off.
Set on a wax paper lined cookie sheet to harden. If you want to speed up the hardening process you may put the apples in the refrigerator until the chocolate is hardened. Do not leave them in the refrigerator for long. The cold could potentially separate the fats in the chocolate and make your chocolate apple looked streaked. Leave them on the counter at room temperature.
Variations of chocolate apples:
To create a dramatically beautiful apple drizzle it with white chocolate – melt a ½ cup of white chocolate and by using a fork dipped in the chocolate drizzle over the apples. Gorgeous!
You may also dip chocolate apples while the chocolate is still warm in crushed nuts, coconut, chopped candy or other favorite toppings.
